Mints in India

India has several mints operated by the Government of India under the India Government Mint (IGM), which is a part of the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL). The main mints include:

  1. Mumbai Mint: Established in 1829, it is one of the oldest and largest mints in India, producing various coins and medals.
  2. Kolkata Mint: Founded in 1757, it has a rich history and is responsible for producing coins as well as commemorative medals.
  3. Hyderabad Mint: Established in 1903, it specializes in producing coins, tokens, and medals.
  4. Noida Mint: The newest of the mints, operational since 2002, focuses on producing coins for circulation and commemorative coins.

Gradation of coin:

When discussing the gradation of coins, particularly in the context of numismatic grading, terms like GEM, BU (Brilliant Uncirculated), and XF (Extremely Fine) refer to different levels of quality and condition. Here’s a brief overview:

Coin Grading Scale:

  1. GEM (Gem Uncirculated):
    • Exceptional quality with no visible flaws. Coins in this category often have full luster and sharp details. Perfect or near-perfect surfaces, often showing vibrant color and well-defined features.
  2. BU (Brilliant Uncirculated):
    • Uncirculated coins that have not been in circulation, showing minimal wear. While they may have slight imperfections, they still retain much of their original mint luster and appeal.
  3. XF (Extremely Fine):
    • Coins in this grade may have light scratches or marks, but overall, the design remains clear, and the coin is still visually appealing.
